Why a picture file is heavy in the first place
A file's weight comes from two things: how many pixels it holds and how carefully each one is stored. A phone photo is often 12 megapixels saved at a high quality setting, which is far more than a web page, an email or a marketplace listing will ever display. Compression attacks the second part. It stores the same pixels less precisely, in ways the eye is poor at noticing, and the file drops sharply while the picture looks the same.
How this compressor decides the quality
When you pick a size limit, the tool tries the highest quality first. If that already fits, you get it. If not, it narrows in on the best quality that stays under the limit, the way you would by hand, but in a fraction of a second. Only when even a fairly low quality is still too heavy does it start reducing the dimensions, and the result says so plainly. You never get a silently shrunken image.

For Etsy in particular, compression is only half of it. The shop banner, icon and listing photos each have their own recommended dimensions, and transparent PNGs show up black. The Etsy image size checker covers those.
Compress, resize, or both
Compressing keeps the dimensions and lowers the quality. Resizing changes the dimensions. When a 4000 pixel photo is going somewhere that shows it 800 pixels wide, resizing first removes pixels nobody will see, and compressing afterwards gets the rest of the way. When the dimensions are already right, compress alone. For the resizing step, use the image resizer.
When not to compress
Leave print files alone. A design going to Amazon Merch, Redbubble or a print partner should be a full-quality PNG at the size the platform asks for, and a lossy JPG loses exactly the sharp edges a print needs. Compression is for things people look at on a screen.

How do I reduce the file size of a picture?
Upload it above, pick the limit you need, such as under 500 KB, and press Compress. The tool lowers the encoding quality until the file fits and keeps the pixel dimensions the same. If even a low quality cannot reach the limit, it reduces the dimensions as well and tells you it did.
How do I reduce a picture's file size without losing quality?
You cannot shrink a file for free, but you can shrink it without a visible difference. For photographs, a JPG or WebP at 70 to 85 percent quality is usually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size, and often a fraction of the file size. The loss shows first in fine text and sharp edges, so check those.
Should I use JPG or WebP?
WebP usually produces a smaller file than JPG at the same visible quality, and it can keep a transparent background. JPG is accepted almost everywhere, including older upload forms that reject WebP. Use WebP when the destination accepts it, and JPG when you are not sure.
Why is my compressed image not smaller?
Some files are already heavily compressed, typically photos straight from a phone or images saved for the web. Encoding them again at a high quality can produce a file the same size or larger. Choose a lower size limit, or switch to WebP.
Does compressing an image change its dimensions?
Not unless it has to. The tool keeps the width and height and only lowers the quality. When a strict limit such as 100 KB cannot be reached that way, it reduces the dimensions in steps and says so on the result, so you always know what changed. To change the dimensions on purpose, use the image resizer instead.
