How to resize an image

1. Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG. It is read by your browser and never sent anywhere.
2. Choose the new size: type the pixels you want, drag the percentage slider, or pick a ready size. With Keep proportions ticked, changing the width sets the height for you.
3. Pick the format and press Resize & download.

Making a picture smaller: size versus file size

“Smaller” means two different things, and they have different fixes. If the picture is too big on screen or too many pixels for a form or a website, lower the percentage or the width. If the problem is the file being too heavy to upload or email, the format matters more than the dimensions: a JPG or WebP at 70 to 85 percent quality is usually a fraction of the same image as a PNG, with no visible difference in a photo.

Keep PNG when the image has a transparent background or sharp text and flat colour, such as a logo. PNG never loses quality, which is also why its files are larger.

Two details catch people out. The front of a Merch hoodie is shorter than a shirt, at 4500 × 4050, so a shirt file gets cropped there. And Merch phone cases, tote bags and throw pillows are full bleed: anything left transparent prints white, so those designs need a background, the opposite of a shirt. Pixels decide how sharp a print is; placement decides where it lands. These are the ranges Printful, Printify and screen printers publish, on an adult shirt, measured down from the collar seam. Guides disagree by an inch here and there, so where they differ the range covers them.

Two notes before you rely on it. Full front sizes like 12 × 16 inches are the maximum print area, not the typical design, which is closer to 10 to 12 inches wide. And providers treat shirt sizes differently: Printify scales designs down for sizes below L, while Printful prints the same size on every shirt except on its larger 15 × 18 inch products, where small sizes are scaled down. A design that fills an XL can look large on a small.

Why enlarging an image makes it blurry

Any tool can make a small image 4500 pixels wide. None can add the detail that was never there, so an enlarged image looks soft, and in print it looks worse than on screen. When a t-shirt size is much bigger than your file, the tool says how many times it is stretching it. At 1.5 times or more, find a larger original or redraw the design as a vector.
