Checks the file, not just the size

Catches the three things that break an Etsy upload silently: transparency in a PNG, an animated GIF, and a file over 1MB.

Etsy's own numbers

Every figure is quoted from Etsy's help pages, with the minimum and the recommended size kept apart, because they are not the same thing.

Resize in one click

Click an Etsy size and download the image at that size, flattened onto white and under 1MB. It happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Every Etsy image size in one table

These come from Etsy's own help pages. Where Etsy publishes both a minimum and a recommendation, both are listed, because they are routinely quoted as if they were the same number.

Five things most Etsy size guides get wrong

  1. The mini banner is not 760 × 100. That figure is the minimum for the order receipt banner, which appears on buyer receipts and not on your shop page at all. The mini shop banner is 1200 × 160 minimum, 1600 × 213 recommended. This is the most confused pair of numbers in Etsy image guidance.
  2. You get 20 listing photos, not 10.Etsy's guide to creating a listing says twenty photos and two videos. Ten photos and one video was the older limit, and almost every article still repeats it.
  3. Transparent PNGs do not work. Etsy states plainly that transparent .png files are not supported and that transparent areas appear black. A logo exported with a transparent background becomes a black box. Animated GIFs are not supported either.
  4. Etsy publishes no DPI guidance. None. DPI metadata has no effect on how an image displays on a screen, so the 72 DPI figure repeated everywhere has no Etsy source. What Etsy does ask for is sRGB, and it converts uploads to sRGB.
  5. 1200 × 300 is the floor, not the target. Etsy recommends 1600 × 400 for the big banner. Uploading at the minimum is why so many shop banners look soft, because Etsy compresses images on upload to speed up the page.

What Etsy does not tell you

Two numbers get quoted confidently and have no source behind them. The first is a mobile “safe zone” for the banner. Etsy publishes no such rectangle, and the figures circulating contradict each other, including one built on a banner width Etsy does not use. The only thing Etsy actually says is that image sizes are optimised for mobile displays, so keeping your subject and any text near the centre is sensible advice rather than a specification.

The second is the thumbnail crop ratio. Etsy says your photo appears in three views across the site and gives you a tool to position it, but it never publishes what those views crop to. Use Etsy's own thumbnail adjuster rather than designing to a ratio someone guessed.

There is also one place where Etsy contradicts itself: the listing video length is 3 to 15 seconds on its video help page and 5 to 15 seconds on its create-a-listing page. Staying inside 5 to 15 seconds satisfies both.

The sizes are the easy part

Getting every image right makes a shop look professional, and a professional-looking shop in a niche with no buyers still earns nothing. The decision that actually moves the number is which niche you list in, and that one gets made before you photograph anything.

That is the part Trendlytic handles. One search reads Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon Merch together and shows which niches have buyers behind them and how many sellers are already there, with rising badges on designs that are climbing now. Any phrase can go to the live USPTO register in a click before you commit. From $9 a month, with a trial before anything is charged.

Your photos fit. Does the niche?

A perfectly sized listing still sells nothing if the shelf is already crowded. Trendlytic shows what is genuinely selling across Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon Merch, scored for demand and competition, before you photograph anything.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Etsy shop banner be?

Etsy sets a minimum of 1200 x 300px for the big shop banner and recommends 1600 x 400px, a 4:1 ratio. Use the recommended size rather than the minimum: Etsy compresses images on upload, so a file at the bare minimum comes out soft. The mini banner is a separate size at 1200 x 160px minimum and 1600 x 213px recommended.

Is the Etsy mini banner 760 x 100?

No, and this is the most confused pair of numbers in Etsy image guidance. 760 x 100px is the minimum for the order receipt banner, which appears on receipts rather than your shop page. The mini shop banner is 1200 x 160px minimum, 1600 x 213px recommended.

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on both the width and the height. The first photo has a minimum of 635 x 635px, and Etsy says listings below that show up lower in search. Etsy also asks that the first photo be landscape or square, because it sets the shape every photo after it is displayed in.

How many photos can you add to an Etsy listing?

Twenty photos and two videos per listing, according to Etsy's own guide to creating a listing. Most articles online still say ten photos and one video, which was the older limit.

Can you use a transparent PNG on Etsy?

No. Etsy states that transparent .png files are not supported, and that transparent areas appear black once uploaded. This catches sellers uploading a logo with a transparent background as their shop icon. Flatten the image onto a solid background before uploading. Animated .gif files are not supported either.

What DPI should Etsy images be?

Etsy publishes no DPI or PPI guidance at all, and DPI metadata has no effect on how an image displays on a screen. Only the pixel dimensions matter. The widely repeated 72 DPI figure does not come from Etsy. What Etsy does ask for is the sRGB colour profile, and it converts uploads to sRGB.

Does Etsy compress uploaded images?

Yes. Etsy says images may appear less sharp after uploading because the files are compressed to improve page performance, and that image sizes are optimised for mobile displays. That is the practical reason to upload at the recommended dimensions rather than the minimum, and to keep files under 1MB so they upload reliably.

How do I resize an image for Etsy?

Drop the image into the tool above, click the slot you need, such as the big banner at 1600 x 400 or a listing photo at 2000 x 2000, and press Generate. Choose Crop to fill to cover the whole size, or Fit inside to keep the whole image with white bars. The download is a JPG on a white background and under 1MB, which avoids the two file problems Etsy warns about.

Is this Etsy image resizer free?

Completely free, with no account and no sign-up. Resizing happens in your browser using the canvas API, so the image is never uploaded, sent to a server or stored.
