Trendlytic vs Checking an idea by hand
| Checking an idea by hand | Trendlytic | |
|---|---|---|
| Time for one idea | An afternoon across four sites | About a minute |
| Marketplaces | Whichever you remember to open | Amazon US, Etsy, Redbubble and TeePublic together |
| New designs getting through | Hard to spot among old best sellers | Rising marks new designs already selling |
| How crowded it is | A results count, site by site | Open or Busy for each marketplace, then one verdict |
| Protected names | A separate search at the USPTO | Flagged in the results, and any phrase goes to the USPTO in one click |
| Cost | Your time | 1 credit for one marketplace, up to 4 for all four, on plans from $19.99 a month |
If you test one idea a year, the manual way is fine and costs nothing. The verdict is a read of what the marketplaces show today, not a promise of sales. It is our own product, so weigh this table with that in mind.

What you get
Every print-on-demand seller has a folder of designs that never sold, and most of them failed before the first pixel was drawn. The idea felt good, a friend liked it, a keyword tool showed a healthy number. None of that tells you whether buyers are paying for this kind of shirt today, or how many shops are already standing in front of them. A validator should answer two plain questions before you spend the hours: are new designs getting through in this niche, and is there still room for one more? Checking that by hand means four marketplaces and most of an afternoon, for one idea.
A verdict from 1 to 5
Perfect Niche is a 5. Below it the wording gets plainer, down to Saturated, so you know what to do next without reading a report.
Four marketplaces, one answer
An idea can be crowded on Amazon US and wide open on Etsy. Each marketplace gets its own Open or Busy read beside the overall verdict.
Proof that newcomers get through
Rising marks new designs already selling. If none turn up, the niche may belong to old shops, and that is worth knowing first.
Trademark trouble caught early
Designs and phrases that lean on a protected name are marked, and a click on TM checks any phrase at the USPTO.
Honest about a thin read
When a marketplace has too little to judge, the page says so and shows what it found instead of padding the score.
Your searches stay in one place
Every idea you test sits in Recent, so a list of ten candidates can be compared side by side over a week.
Inside the app
See it working

It will tell you no
A validator that praises every idea is decoration. Retired teacher sounds like a safe gift niche, and on Amazon US it came back Saturated, scored 2: 30,000 results, and not one Rising design in the 32 shirts it read. That no took about a minute. The button under it opens the narrower niches around the idea, which is usually where the real shirt is.

The designs behind the score
A number alone is hard to trust, so every verdict sits on top of the designs it read. For dialysis nurse that meant 204 of them across four marketplaces, with humor about kidneys next to soft doodle shirts for appreciation week. You can see what buyers in the niche respond to, and whether you have something different to say to them.

A closed niche often hides an open one
When the broad idea fails, Keyword Research shows where it might still work. Retired teacher was Saturated as a whole, yet came taught sat at 238 Amazon US results and rated Great. It is one credit, and it can turn a rejected idea into a narrower one worth testing.

A yes moves straight to a draft
Once an idea passes, you do not start from a blank page. Open any design in the results and, for 2 credits, Generate listing drafts the title, the tags, a slogan and an art prompt: your own version for the same buyer. Validation and the first draft happen in the same sitting.
Built-in trademark check
Check any phrase against the live USPTO register before you design
Type a phrase and Trendlytic looks it up in the live USPTO register and shows who owns it, its status and its filing date. Included in every plan.
And the designs that were never yours to print are marked
When a result leans on a known brand, a character or a famous person, it arrives with a TM or copyright badge on the card. You see it while you are choosing, not after a takedown. A first filter, not legal advice.
How it works
- 1
Type the idea as a buyer would
A person and a twist work best: dialysis nurse, retired teacher, cat mom. Choose all four marketplaces or just the one you sell on.
- 2
Read the verdict, then the designs
About a minute later you have the score, the read per marketplace and the designs behind them.
- 3
Design it, narrow it or drop it
A high score goes to your design queue. A low one goes to Keyword Research or the bin, and you have lost a minute.

Also in every plan
A mockup generator for the design you make next
When your own design for the niche is ready, drop the file in and see it on 500+ t-shirt photos in one go. Pick the shots that fit your shop, on a person or on its own, and save them at up to 2000 px with no watermark. A mockup takes 1 credit from your plan the first time and nothing after that.

Frequently asked questions
How does the 3-day free trial work?
Every plan starts with 3 days free. Starting it charges $1 to check the card is real, and that $1 is not refunded. The plan price itself is only billed when the trial ends, and cancelling before then from Manage Plan means it is never charged.
I haven't sold anything yet. Is Trendlytic for me?
Yes. A search needs no shop and no sales history: type an idea and you see what already sells for it on Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon US, how crowded each one is, and a plain verdict. Start with the marketplace you plan to sell on. If you are not ready for a trial, the free tools at /tools need no account.
What is a niche validator?
It is a tool that tests a product idea against live marketplace data before you make anything. Ours reads what is selling on four print-on-demand marketplaces, how crowded each one is, and whether new designs are getting through, then sums that up in a verdict.
How do you validate a print on demand niche by hand?
Search the idea on each marketplace, look at how many results there are, and look for recent designs that are doing well rather than only old best sellers. Check the phrase for trademarks too. It works, but it takes hours per idea, which is why most sellers skip it.
Does a Perfect Niche guarantee sales?
No. It means new designs are selling there today and the field is not crowded. Your design, price and listing still decide the rest, and a niche can change, so read the verdict close to the day you design.
What if my niche comes back Saturated?
That is the verdict doing its job. Use the button under it to find open niches around the idea, or run Keyword Research for narrower phrases. A saturated broad niche often has a corner with room left.
Do I need a niche finder or a niche validator?
A finder gives you ideas when you have none: try our Niche Finder or AI Niche Finder for that. A validator starts from an idea you already have and tells you whether to spend time on it. Most sellers use both.
How many ideas can I test?
Each search costs 1 credit for one marketplace and up to 4 for all four. Plans start at $19.99 a month with 100 searches, plus the 1,000 top winning designs of the day in Best Design Instant.
