There are more printing methods in the world, but for POD apparel these three cover the vast majority of what you will ever sell:
- DTG (Direct-to-Garment): an inkjet-style process that sprays ink straight into the fabric. Soft, detailed, cotton-friendly.
- DTF (Direct-to-Film): the design is printed onto a film, coated with adhesive, then heat-pressed onto the garment. Bold, durable, works on nearly any fabric.
- Sublimation: heat turns dye into gas that bonds into polyester fibers. Zero texture, extreme vibrancy, polyester only, and the method behind all-over print.

What is DTG printing?
DTG stands for Direct-to-Garment. Think of it as a specialized inkjet printer, except instead of printing on paper it prints directly onto a t-shirt.
How it works: the garment is loaded onto a platen, and the printer sprays water-based ink directly into the fabric fibers. On dark garments, the machine first lays down a white underbase (this requires pretreating the shirt with a fluid so the white ink holds), then prints the colors on top. On light garments it can often skip the heavy underbase.
Feel: this is DTG's biggest strength. Because the ink soaks into the fibers rather than sitting in a thick layer, a DTG print has little to no "hand." Run your fingers over it and you can barely feel the design. That soft, worn-in quality is exactly what people want from a premium cotton tee.
Fabric: DTG loves cotton. It works best on 100% cotton or high-cotton blends, because the water-based ink needs natural fibers to bond into. It struggles on polyester, where the ink does not absorb well and colors can look dull or wash out faster.
Best for: detailed, photographic, full-color artwork. If your design has gradients, fine lines, or a lot of colors, DTG reproduces it cleanly. Durability is good with proper care, though like most prints it can fade gradually over many washes, especially if a customer uses hot water and high-heat drying.
What is DTF printing?
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film, and it has exploded in popularity for a simple reason: it removes most of DTG's limitations.
How it works: instead of printing onto the garment, the printer prints your design onto a sheet of PET film. A layer of adhesive powder is applied over the wet ink, the film is cured with heat, and then the whole transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment. The film peels away and the design stays bonded to the fabric.
Feel: here is the trade-off. Because the print is a transfer laid on top of the fabric rather than soaked into it, a DTF print has more of a "hand." You can feel it as a slightly raised, smooth layer, and larger solid designs feel more noticeable than a DTG print. Newer DTF films are getting softer and stretchier, but it is still a surface print by nature.
Fabric: this is where DTF shines. Because it does not rely on the ink bonding into natural fibers, it works on almost anything: cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and more. It also handles dark garments well without the same white-underbase pretreatment hassle DTG needs, since the white is built into the transfer itself.
Best for: bold, high-contrast designs and products where DTG falls short, like polyester performance wear, blended hoodies, tote bags, and hats. DTF prints tend to be vivid and hold up well to washing, and they stretch with the fabric better than you might expect, which is why they are popular for athletic and blended garments.
What is sublimation printing?
Sublimation is a completely different chemistry from the other two, and understanding it clears up most of the confusion around all-over print.
How it works: the design is printed onto special transfer paper, then heat is applied. That heat turns the solid dye directly into a gas (this phase change is what "sublimation" means) and the gas bonds into the polyester fibers, becoming part of the material. When it cools, the color is locked inside the fabric, not sitting on top of it.
Feel: zero hand. Because the dye becomes part of the fiber, there is literally nothing to feel. No layer, no texture, no cracking or peeling over time. It is the softest result of the three because the print and the fabric are the same thing.
Fabric: and here is the hard limit. Sublimation only bonds to polyester, and it works best on white or light-colored poly, because the dye is translucent and cannot cover a dark base. It does not work on cotton at all. That is a chemical fact of the process, not a preference. If you want sublimation and cotton, you are out of luck.
Best for: extremely vibrant, durable prints on light polyester, and crucially, all-over print. Because the fabric can be printed as flat panels before being sewn into a garment, sublimation is what lets a design wrap seam to seam across an entire hoodie or pair of leggings. If a product description says "AOP," it is almost certainly sublimated polyester. Which print method is best?
There is no single winner, and any provider or blog that tells you one method is always best is selling something. The right method depends on four things:
- Your design. Photographic, gradient-heavy, subtle artwork favors DTG. Bold, high-contrast graphics work on DTF or sublimation.
- The fabric. Cotton points to DTG. Polyester or blends point to DTF. Light polyester with a full-coverage design points to sublimation.
- Garment color. DTG needs an underbase on dark shirts, DTF handles dark easily, and sublimation simply cannot go on dark garments at all.
- Durability and feel. Want the softest possible cotton tee? DTG. Want a bold design that survives heavy washing on a hoodie? Often DTF. Want zero texture and maximum vibrancy on poly? Sublimation.
In practice, a soft vintage-style cotton tee is usually DTG, a durable bold graphic on a blended hoodie is often DTF, and an all-over galaxy pattern on a polyester hoodie is sublimation. Different jobs, different tools.
What this means for print-on-demand sellers
Now the part that actually matters for your store. As a POD seller, you usually do not choose the printing machine. The provider assigns the method based on the product. Choose a Bella+Canvas cotton tee and you will likely get DTG. Choose an all-over-print hoodie and you get sublimation. Choose a polyester performance shirt and you may get DTF.
So the method is not a button you press. It is a consequence of the product you list. But that has three real implications:
- Product selection. If you want that soft, no-hand feel, you need to pick cotton products that use DTG, not a polyester item. If your design is bold and you want it on many fabric types, DTF-friendly products give you more room.
- Design fit. A design with fine gradients might look stunning as a DTG print on cotton and mediocre as a bold DTF transfer. Knowing the method helps you match the artwork to the garment.
- Customer expectations and returns. This is the one sellers forget. A customer who buys an "all-over print" hoodie expecting soft cotton is going to be surprised by polyester. A customer who feels a slight texture on a DTF print might think it is low quality if they expected DTG softness.
