Does polyester shrink?

No, not in any meaningful way under normal use. Wash it warm, tumble dry it on a normal setting, and 100% polyester comes out the same size it went in. It is dimensionally stable, which is a technical way of saying it keeps its shape.

The only real exception is high heat. Because polyester is a synthetic fiber that was set with heat when it was made, a temperature high enough to relax or soften those fibers can distort the fabric. That means a very hot wash, a high-heat dryer cycle, or a hot iron. Even then, the effect is usually mild, and the bigger risk is warping, puckering, or damaging the surface rather than a clean shrink.

So if you have ever pulled a polyester shirt out of the dryer expecting it to be a size smaller and found it unchanged, that is exactly the behavior to expect.

Why polyester barely shrinks

It comes down to what the fiber is. Cotton is a natural plant fiber with a structure that absorbs water, swells, and then relaxes into a slightly smaller, tighter state when heat is applied. That relaxation is the shrink.

Polyester is a man-made fiber derived from petroleum, closer to a fine plastic filament than to a plant. During manufacturing it is heat-set, meaning it is locked into shape at a high temperature. Once it has been set, ordinary laundry heat is not enough to undo that. The fibers do not absorb much water either, so they do not swell and relax the way cotton does.

That is also why polyester dries quickly and resists wrinkles. The same stability that stops it shrinking stops it holding creases and stops it soaking up moisture.

One more thing follows from this. Because polyester does not absorb water, it also does not fade or wear the way cotton slowly does over dozens of washes. The flip side is that it can pill (those tiny fabric balls) with friction, and it holds onto body odor more than cotton does, because the oils have nowhere to soak in.

Does polyester shrink in the wash or dryer?

In a normal wash and a normal dryer, no. The temperature simply is not high enough to move heat-set synthetic fibers. This is true for cold and warm washes and for low to medium dryer heat.

Can you shrink polyester on purpose?

People search for how to shrink polyester, usually because a shirt is slightly too big. The honest answer is that you can nudge it a little with high heat, but it is not reliable and it is not worth much.

To shrink polyester at all you would use the hottest wash and the hottest dryer setting you can. The problem is threefold. First, the change is small, so you often will not get the fit you wanted. Second, high heat can permanently warp, pucker, or glaze the fabric, so you can ruin the garment while barely changing the size. Third, if there is a print on it, the heat can crack, peel, or distort the design.

So my practical answer is: do not count on shrinking polyester. If fit matters, size down when you buy rather than trying to shrink after the fact. This is different from cotton, which you genuinely can shrink a full size or so with a hot wash and hot dry, sometimes even by accident.

If you are a seller, this is actually good news. It means the shirts you print on polyester arrive at the customer the size the sizing chart promised, and they stay that size. Fewer "it shrank" complaints and fewer returns. The care instruction you want on a polyester product is simple: wash cool, dry low, and it will hold. Does polyester stretch? Is it stretchy?

Plain polyester has very little natural stretch. On its own it is a fairly stable, structured fabric. If someone asks "is polyester stretchy," the accurate answer is no, not by itself.

The stretch you feel in a lot of polyester clothing comes from a blend. When polyester is combined with elastane or spandex (often just a small percentage), the garment gains real stretch and recovery. That is what makes leggings, fitted athletic tops, and performance tees move with the body.
