Print on Demand Ornaments: Suppliers and Dates for 2026

The Journal
Share this

TL;DR: Print on demand ornaments sell on the name and the year printed on them, and that same year means a dated design stops selling on December 25. On October 9, 2026, Printful, Printify, Gooten, CustomCat and teelaunch all offered ornaments in ceramic, metal, acrylic, glass, wood or MDF, while I found none at Gelato. Printful's 2026 cutoff for home and living orders made in the US and sent to US addresses is December 11 with standard shipping (November 26 when made abroad), and Printify had not published its 2026 dates yet. Sell through Etsy or Zazzle with the year as a swappable layer; Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon Merch showed no physical ornament.

Today is October 9, which leaves 77 days until Christmas morning. If you want a Q4 product that is small, light, giftable and printed to order, the tree ornament belongs on your shortlist.

It behaves unlike most things you can print. A shirt is judged on its artwork. An ornament is judged on two short lines: whose it is, and which year it marks. A family hangs "Mila 2026" beside "Mila 2025" and looks at both every December for decades. Every supplier fact below comes from that supplier's own pages, read this week.

Don't miss the next one.

New POD niche analysis every Wednesday.

Page one belongs to retailers, so pick your phrases

On October 9 I read page one for every phrase this guide targets.

"Custom christmas ornaments" belonged to established gift shops: Personal Creations, Bronner's, Lenox, Christopher Radko, Old World Christmas, Minted, Walmart's photo center and promotional printers. "Personalized ornaments" added Hallmark, Shutterfly, Personalization Mall and an Etsy market page. A new shop's website will not outrank that list this December.

The seller phrases look different. "Print on demand ornaments" returned supplier pages (Gooten, Printify, Printful, Merchize, Contrado), Reddit threads comparing vendors, and YouTube walkthroughs. "Christmas ornaments to make and sell" was business blogs and Reddit craft threads. So this guide serves the seller, and the selling happens inside Etsy and Zazzle search, where narrow phrases still give a small shop a chance.

The year is the product, and also the expiry date

A mug with a good joke can sell for three years. An ornament reading "Our First Christmas 2026" sells for a few weeks. The buyer pays for the date because it turns a decoration into a record: the first year in the house, the first year married, the year the baby arrived. That makes ornaments collectable, and it puts an expiry date inside every dated design.

Build the year as its own layer. Keep the year in a separate text layer, in a font tested at size, and never flatten it into the art. Next autumn you change one layer from 2026 to 2027 and export again. Keep the evergreen line beside it, such as "Our First Christmas", identical in wording and font every year, so a returning buyer's ornaments match.

Let the buyer pick the year instead of typing it. Etsy's help page on personalized listings describes three field types: a text box for names, dates and messages, a list of options for fixed choices, and a file upload. Put the year in a list of options, adding last year if you sell to parents whose baby arrived last December. A typed year invites "2062"; a dropdown cannot be misspelled.

Know when a listing dies. Print on demand means no dead stock: no box of unsold 2026 ornaments waits in your garage in January. You hold dead listings instead. On December 26 every "2026" listing shows a year that just ended, and so do its photos, since Etsy requires the main image of a personalized item to show a finished example rather than a blank or "Your Text Here" placeholder. Pause the dated listings after Christmas, keep the undated ones running, and next September edit the year in the title, photos and options rather than starting a fresh listing with no sales history.

Here ornaments part ways with stockings, which our custom stockings guide treats as a set a family adds to as it grows. A dated ornament gets bought again every year, because the number changed.

Personalization is the whole business

Nearly every ornament search is a milestone: baby's first Christmas, first Christmas married or engaged, first Christmas in a new home, a puppy's first Christmas, and memorial ornaments for someone missing from the table this year. Each needs its own fields.

MilestoneFields to ask forWhere it goes wrong
Baby's first ChristmasName, year, optional birth date or photoA misspelled name on a gift grandparents keep for life
Couple's first ChristmasTwo first names or a surname, year, wedding or engagement dateName order, and "Mr and Mrs" for couples who did not share a surname
New homeSurname, year, optional town or house photoA full street address on a decoration other people will see
PetPet's name, year, photoDark, blurry or tightly cropped photos
MemorialName, dates, optional photo and a short lineWrong dates, and the wrong tone

The order form. Etsy's guidance is one detail per field, a title saying exactly what to enter, instructions on where the text appears, and a character limit between 1 and 1,024 chosen for your design. On a 3-inch ornament that limit matters: find the longest name that still reads at size and cap the field there. Etsy only allows add-on prices on optional text fields, so keep the name required and charge for add-ons like a second line of text.

Proofing. A typo on a shirt costs one reprint; on an ornament it gets spotted every December for twenty years. Copy names from the order and paste them, never retype. For photo and memorial ornaments, email a proof and hold the order until the buyer approves it in writing. Say in the listing that you print exactly what the buyer types.

Memorial orders. These are bought in grief, often against a date. Offer two or three wording choices rather than a blank box, check the dates twice, and keep upsells out of your messages. Our pet portraits guide has a section on pacing memorial commissions that carries straight over to pet ornaments.

Ceramic and porcelain are the classic choice and the strongest for photos, with a glossy finish on the Printful, Printify and Gooten pages. Two catches. Gooten warns that ceramic ornaments "do have a tendency to have a halo effect" from the coating, and asks for text above 8 point with no thin lines. And ceramic breaks or scratches: reviews on Printful's ceramic ornament page include one set that arrived with scratched fronts and a complaint about packing with a small piece of bubble wrap.

Metal means sublimated aluminum: thin, light, glossy and hard to break in the post. Several metal blanks take a separate back print, the natural home for a name and year.

Acrylic shines like glass without the weight or the breakage. Printful's carries a small production QR code on the back that "may be slightly visible through the material", and Gooten prints its acrylic front only, over a white background.

Glass looks the most premium and is the most fragile. Printful's is 3.5 inches across, printed on one side, with beveled edges and a gold ribbon.

Wood was the one surface without a glossy coat on the pages I read. Printful says its Hinoki ornaments may show knots and natural resin, and Gooten notes that white ink does not appear on its maple, so the grain shows through anything designed in white.

One side or two. A single-sided ornament turns on the branch and shows a blank back half the time. For art on one side and the name and year on the other, pick a blank with separate front and back print files, such as Printful's metal and wood ornaments.

How it arrives. None of the supplier pages I read promised a gift box. If yours ships without one, say so, because a gift buyer will assume otherwise.

Breakage and reprints. Printful reships or refunds damaged items reported within 30 days of delivery with a clear photo. Printify may give a free reprint for a faulty product reported within 30 days of delivery. Gooten covers an item "broken or damaged during transit" reported within 4 weeks with photo evidence. A reprint goes back through production, though, so an ornament that breaks on December 18 may not be replaced in time.

Designing for a 3-inch canvas

Most blanks above measure about 2.75 to 3.5 inches across, smaller than a phone screen and seen among lights and branches.

  • Type size. Pick a font that still reads when you hold a full-size paper print at arm's length. Gooten's 8 point floor is a minimum, not a goal.
  • Script fonts. Hairline scripts look elegant on a mockup and vanish on a branch. Use a heavy script for the name only, and set the year in a plain face.
  • Safe area. Gooten allows a centering tolerance of up to 1/8 inch on each side and advises against keyline borders. Keep text well inside the edge, especially on stars and snowflakes.
  • Photo crops. Crop to the face, not the room. A pet photographed across the sofa becomes a smudge at 3 inches, and a heart cuts off ears a circle keeps, so preview each crop on the real shape.
  • Round versus shaped. A circle gives the most even text area; a paw or star carries meaning but less room, so cap characters per shape.
  • Contrast. Dark on light or light on dark. Mid-tone red on mid-tone green is the classic Christmas palette and a poor surface to read.

The "keep" rows bring repeat buyers, since a household wants next year's ornament to match this one. The gift rows are more crowded and reward a narrower angle: a music teacher rather than "teacher".

Bulk orders need the right blank. Printful's two-sided ceramic comes in packs of 3, 5 and 10, Printify sells one ceramic ornament in packs of up to 20, and Gooten's policy page says it gives no bulk discounts. For team ornaments, print the sport and the child's name, never the club's crest. A household ordering named ornaments may want named cards too, which our greeting cards guide covers.

Printful's catalog files ornaments under home and living, and its ceramic, metal, acrylic and glass ones are stocked in its US region, so plan around the first row while checking where each order is routed. Its earlier standard date, November 26, is Thanksgiving Day. Printify called its 2025 dates suggested deadlines for delivery by December 24, and posted them on October 31 last year.

What the window means in practice:

  • October. List now, so listings collect views, favorites and first sales before December shoppers arrive.
  • November. Personalized orders need a proofing day. Set your shop's cutoff two or three days before your supplier's.
  • December. Once your cutoff passes, say in the description's first line that orders arrive after Christmas, or pause the dated listings.
  • December 26. The dated listings die; the undated ones carry on.

Our free POD calendar shows how many weeks ahead of each season to have listings live. For Q4 beyond ornaments, read our Christmas print on demand guide.

Pressing your own instead

Some sellers skip print on demand and press ornaments themselves with sublimation blanks. You then control proofing and the yearly date change at your own bench, and can pack each one in a gift box. In return, breakage in the post becomes your cost, the USPS dates become your deadline, and you buy blanks before knowing which designs sell.

Ceramic and aluminum ornaments need different press settings, so take them from our sublimation temperature chart, which has a row for each. Our sublimation blanks guide covers where to buy blanks.

Characters, film lines and the Keepsake question

Christmas films and specials supply much of the season's imagery, so ornaments attract borrowed characters. On October 9 I searched the USPTO's trademark database for character names and stock phrases sellers put on ornaments.

Two lessons. The famous characters are registered for ornaments specifically, and copyright protects how a character looks whatever the register says. A buyer typing a character's name into your personalization box does not make it yours to print.

And "no live record found" is not permission. It means my search found nothing live under that exact wording. A register search is a first filter only, never legal advice. It also misses unregistered rights, other spellings and each marketplace's own rules. Run your phrases through our POD trademark checker, and read our print on demand trademark guide on interpreting what comes back.

Where to sell print on demand ornaments

  • Etsy with a supplier. The natural home: an Etsy market page ranks on page one for "personalized ornaments", and its personalization fields fit the name and year model. Printful, Printify, CustomCat and teelaunch list Etsy integrations, and Etsy asks you to disclose a production partner on the listing.
  • Zazzle. Sells ornaments. Its ornament category showed ceramic, glass, metal, pewter and photo cube ornaments, many personalized, and it runs a creator program.
  • Redbubble. Blocked my direct checks. Its "ornaments" pages in search results describe ornament-themed designs on T-shirts, stickers, wall art and home decor; I found no physical tree ornament.
  • TeePublic. Also blocked. Its ornament pages in search results were designs on T-shirts, stickers, tapestries and posters.
  • Amazon Merch on Demand. No sign of ornaments. Amazon's Merch landing page loaded without a product list, and a 2026 third-party guide to its product types names apparel, PopSockets, phone cases, throw pillows and totes.
  • Your own store. Best for returning families and bulk orders.

Check the demand before the design hours

October leaves room to finish a handful of ornament ideas properly, not dozens. Before choosing, check two things separately: that buyers are paying for that audience and occasion now, and how crowded that corner already is. Search volume on its own misleads, since plenty of people browse and never buy; what counts is what sells. Checking that manually on several marketplaces eats most of an evening per idea.

When a theme clearly sells, take the buyer and the tone from it, not the file. Build an ornament of your own aimed at that buyer, in the look they keep picking, with original art and wording.

My tool, and the one step it covers

Before the pitch, the conflict of interest: I created Trendlytic, I sell it by monthly subscription, and that income pays me. Its job in this guide is narrow: the demand check that comes before any artwork, nothing later.

Type an audience or an occasion, for example "nurse ornament" or "first christmas engaged", and it pulls that phrase from TeePublic, Etsy, Amazon Merch and Redbubble together. You learn whether shoppers spend money on the idea, and how thick the competition around it has grown. Only Etsy, of those four, sells a physical ornament that I could verify. The remaining three still settle a fair question for ornaments: does this audience buy themed goods at all? A crowd that buys pickleball shirts and stickers in volume is a better bet for a pickleball ornament than one that buys nothing. Designs climbing right now show a rising badge, handy when October leaves time for only a few ideas. When a phrase makes you hesitate, it sits one click away from the live USPTO register, whatever your plan; the record you open is a first filter to read before any drawing starts, never legal advice. Signing up opens three days of access and asks for a card; after that, the smallest plan bills $19.99 monthly. Size up an ornament niche if picking one is the hard part.

FAQ

Does print on demand work for Christmas ornaments? Yes. On October 9, 2026, Printful, Printify, Gooten, CustomCat and teelaunch all offered ornaments in ceramic or porcelain, aluminum, acrylic, glass, wood or MDF. I found none at Gelato.

What is the best material for personalized ornaments? Glossy ceramic or porcelain for photos, accepting that it can chip or scratch in transit. Aluminum or acrylic for durability. Wood for a rustic look, though white ink does not show on maple.

When should custom ornaments be ordered to arrive by Christmas 2026? Through Printful to US addresses, December 11 with standard shipping when made in the US, and November 26 when made abroad. Printify's 2026 dates were not out on October 9; last year it advised December 10 for standard Printify Choice orders. Close your own orders a few days sooner, for proofs.

How do I sell ornaments on Etsy? Link Printful, Printify or another supplier to your shop, name it as your production partner, and use Custom options: a required text box for the name and a list of options for the year, with a finished, personalized example as the main photo.

What size should an ornament design be? The blanks I checked run from about 2.75 to 3.5 inches across. Use your supplier's template, keep text inside the edge, and test a full-size paper print at arm's length.

Is "Baby's First Christmas" trademarked? My USPTO search on October 9 found five records for that exact phrase, all dead. That does not make it free to use. The register only gives you a first filter, none of this is legal advice, and related marks such as MY FIRST CHRISTMAS are live for other goods.

Before the first proof goes out

Ornaments cost little to make and a lot to get wrong, because they stay in the family. Spell the name right, keep the year easy to swap, and know the day each dated listing stops selling.

Which milestone would you design for first this October: a baby's first Christmas, a new home, or the dog who finally gets an ornament of its own?
