TL;DR: Custom stockings for Christmas are bought with a name on them, one per person, and the same family often returns a year or three later to add one for a new baby, partner or dog. Printify lists the widest stocking range, Gooten sells two, Printful had one in stock on October 5 (its original white-cuff stocking showed as unavailable), Gelato showed none, and all of them are printed rather than embroidered. Printful's 2026 cutoffs for home and living products reaching US addresses by Christmas are November 26 for standard shipping from its facilities abroad and December 11 from its US facilities. Your listings belong online this month, while families are still deciding.
Today is October 5, eighty-one days before Christmas morning. To remove any doubt: this guide is about the stocking that hangs from a mantel or a stair rail, not about hosiery.
Hardly anyone wants a blank Christmas stocking. People pay for a child's name in big letters, or the dog's name in the same font as everyone else's. So you are running a personalization business with a decor product attached, and this guide covers the setup, the suppliers, the dates, and the buyer most sellers forget: the one who returns next December.
Don't miss the next one.
New POD niche analysis every Wednesday.
Who already owns page one
Google refuses automated checks, so on October 5 I read the first page of Brave Search for each phrase.
For "custom stockings", page one was personalization retailers (MerryStockings, Personal Creations, Lillian Vernon, Thread the Word), home brands (Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Mark and Graham, Lands' End), an Amazon product page, Etsy's search page and print shops such as Contrado. Not a single hosiery result showed up, so the people typing it want the Christmas kind.
"Personalized christmas stockings" looked much the same. "Embroidered christmas stockings" brought in Balsam Hill, Wayfair and two Etsy pages, and "print on demand christmas stockings" belonged to suppliers such as Contrado, Merchize, Printify, Printful and Gooten.
The honest read: a new shop's own page will not rank for "custom stockings" this season, because retailers with years of reviews hold it. You compete inside Etsy and Amazon search, and on narrower phrases. A search for "teacher christmas stocking" returned five Etsy pages among the first twelve results.
The name is the product
Treat the order as one stocking plus one name. Every part of the listing should protect that pairing.
Singles versus sets. A single-stocking listing with one required name field is the cleanest setup: a family of five adds it to the cart five times, and each cart line carries one name. A set listing needs a field per stocking, labelled Name 1, Name 2 and so on, and Etsy allows five custom option fields per listing; Printify's help page counts the same limit as five text and dropdown fields combined. Add a font picker and your largest set shrinks to four. I would keep set listings for fixed groups, such as a couple or two siblings, and send bigger families to the single listing.
One design per listing. If a listing offers a reindeer, a snowman and a plaid version, each name must be tied to a design, or you receive "Mia, Leo, Dad" and three guesses about who wanted the reindeer.
A character cap you have tested. Printify's automated personalization scales the buyer's text to the box you draw, so "Bartholomew" prints smaller than "Ava" on the same stocking. Pick the cap from the longest name that still reads from across the room, on a sample.
The mistakes that turn into refunds:
- a misspelled name, typed in a hurry by the buyer or retyped wrongly by you
- the right name on the wrong design, in listings that offer several
- personalization fields edited on Etsy after publishing, which Printify says breaks the link between Etsy's fields and its design layers and can put a name on the wrong layer
- a pet photo uploaded as HEIC or PDF, which Etsy accepts and Printify does not, so the order stalls until you convert the file
Proofing. Never retype a name; copy it from the order and paste it. With its draft setting on, Printful brings personalized Etsy orders in marked "Requires personalization", and you adjust each design by hand, which is precisely where a typo sneaks in. Printify's Live Preview, on eligible products, shows the buyer a rendered mockup with their own text before checkout, so the spelling gets checked by the person who knows the name. For a photo stocking, send a proof and wait for a yes.
Decide ahead of time who pays for a buyer's typo, and say it in the listing: you print exactly what was typed.
The buyer who comes back next December
A family buys its stockings once, then adds one whenever the family grows: a baby, a new partner, a rescue dog. The new stocking has to look like the ones already hanging, so the family goes looking for whoever made them.
The demand is visible. A search for "new stocking to match existing family stockings" surfaced Reddit threads from people trying to extend a family set, and Engineered Artistry, which knits a new stocking from photos for anyone with "a knit or crochet family stocking but not enough for everyone in your family." It sends a pattern chart for approval before knitting. People pay a maker to reverse-engineer a stocking that could simply have been reordered.
For a print on demand seller, that is repeat revenue with no ad spend, provided you can still make the same stocking. It asks three things of you.
Keep the blank. Record the exact supplier, product name, cuff colour and, on Printify, the print provider. A red plaid cuff from a different factory is a different red.
Keep the design and the listing. Save the master file with its fonts, colour codes and name placement, note the design and font in each order record, and never delete a stocking listing in January: the returning buyer looks for it in their past orders.
Watch for discontinuation. On October 5, Printful's original Christmas Stocking page read "This product is unavailable in your region", and Printful's public catalog showed its only variant out of stock, with no region able to order it. A newer rustic stocking with a plaid cuff was in stock for the US, with zero reviews. Printful's help centre separates "Supplier out of stock", which may return without a guarantee, from "Discontinued", meaning it will not be restocked. A shop that built family orders on the first stocking cannot sell the new baby a match through Printful right now.
Printify carries a quieter version of the risk. Printify Choice selects a print provider per order by itself, and for discontinued products Printify suggests moving to another provider or a similar product; its help page adds that, with Order Routing on, "a similar alternative product model may also be used." The returning family may receive something close rather than identical.
So choose one provider on purpose, order a sample, keep it as your reference copy, and treat any switch as a new product. When a blank disappears, tell returning buyers before they order: show the closest match beside the old one, or offer to remake the whole set on the new blank. Either beats a mismatch landing on December 20.
What print on demand can and cannot do with a stocking
I read each supplier's own pages on October 5; Printful's details also come from its public product catalog.
| Supplier and product | Material | Print method and area | Size | Hanging loop | What I saw on October 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printful Christmas Stocking | 100% polyester, white fold-over cuff | Sublimation on one side, off-white back, cuff unprinted | 7 x 18 in | Yes | Unavailable in my region; catalog variant out of stock |
| Printful Rustic Christmas Stocking | 100% recycled polyester boot and plaid cuff, red/black or white/black | Sublimation on one side, cream back | 10.25 x 16 in | Yes | In stock for the US; no reviews yet |
| Printify Christmas Stockings | 100% polyester fleece | Dye sublimation | 11.81 in cuff width, 17.32 in cuff to heel | 3 in twill ribbon | Printify Choice; assembled in the US from globally sourced parts |
| Printify Christmas Stocking, burlap look | Linen boot, polyester plaid cuff | Dye sublimation, one side, boot only | 10.25 x 16 in | Yes | Printify Choice |
| Printify Santa Stocking | Polyester faux suede | Dye sublimation, all-over print | 13 x 19.3 in | Yes | Providers outside the US only; average production 2.2 days |
| Printify Christmas Stocking (Linen) | 100% linen | DTF, print areas front, back and "Top" | 11.81 x 15.75 in | Strap | Early access, no preview mockups; providers outside the US only |
| Gooten Coral Fleece and Faux Linen stockings | 100% polyester fleece or polyester faux linen | Dye sublimation, front and back | 12 x 20 in | 3 in red twill ribbon | Fulfilled in the US |
| Gelato | None found | None | None | None | Its holiday catalog page listed no stocking |
Printify's stocking page also shows smaller flannel, linen, polyester and paw-shaped versions.
All printed, no thread. On most of these the name is dye pressed into the fabric by sublimation, so any font, colour or photo works. Embroidery comes from smaller suppliers: teelaunch embroiders a name onto a cable-knit stocking with a fur cuff, 8.5 x 16 inches, made in Louisiana in 3 to 6 business days, and Printmood lists a knitted stocking with embroidered personalization. Velvet and needlepoint, the look many brand pages sell, appeared in no print on demand catalog I read. If your stocking is printed, never call it embroidered to catch that search.
The cuff mostly stays blank. Printful's white cuff and the plaid cuffs take no print, Gooten prints front and back, and only Printify's early-access linen stocking lists a third area called Top. On most blanks the name sits on the boot, so show it in your photos.
Sizes disagree. Printful's classic stocking is 7 x 18 inches, Gooten's 12 x 20, Printify's Santa stocking 13 x 19.3. Printful warns of up to an inch of variation from sublimation and hand sewing, and Printify lists plus or minus one inch on its fleece stocking, so even a reorder of the same product can differ slightly.
Care and timing. Gooten's stockings are dry clean or spot clean only, and Printify's burlap-look one is spot clean only; put that in the description. Printify's stocking page quotes 1 to 3 business days to make plus 2 to 5 business days of US shipping. Printful's stocking pages gave no production time, Gooten's timetable did not load for me, and Gelato's catalog sits behind a bot check, so for Gelato I could read only its holiday page.
When stockings must be listed and ordered
In my judgement, a stocking's real deadline comes earlier than most gifts', because it is decoration before it is a container. Families hang stockings when they decorate, often weeks before Christmas Eve.
Verified order-by dates for parcels going to US addresses:
| Route | Last order date for Christmas | Source and status |
|---|---|---|
| Printful home and living, fulfilled in the US | December 11 standard, December 16 express | Printful's 2026 table |
| Printful home and living, fulfilled outside the US | November 26 standard, December 14 express | Printful's 2026 table |
| Printify Choice | December 10 standard, December 5 economy | 2025 list; 2026 dates not published yet |
| Gooten | Not published | Its holiday page is still titled 2024 |
| USPS, once a parcel exists | December 17 Ground Advantage, December 18 Priority Mail, December 19 Priority Mail Express | USPS 2026 send-by dates |
Printful gives home and living products the same dates as apparel this year, and its stockings sit under home and living. Both of its stocking blanks are sourced from China, so check where your order will be fulfilled before you pick a column. The earlier standard date lands on Thanksgiving Day itself.
Printify says its holiday deadlines usually come out by mid-October on its network fulfillment status page. Add your own lag too: a personalized order waiting in drafts for your edit loses a day whenever you are away from the desk.
So your listings go up in October. Put the order-by date on a listing photo and in the first line of the description, and change the copy the day it passes. Our free POD calendar keeps the season's dates in one view, and the Christmas print on demand guide covers the wider season plan.
Character names and team logos
Personalization adds a twist: the buyer types the protected name for you. A stocking reading "Emma" is yours to print; one reading a cartoon character, a film title or a football team is not, even on request, because you produce and sell it.
Christmas film and character names are registered for a long list of goods; the custom pajamas guide lists the Christmas film marks I looked up there. Team names and logos belong to the teams and their leagues, which license them. A red-and-white striped stocking with a child's name borrows nothing; the team's name or crest borrows everything.
Say in the listing which names and logos you will not print, and cancel orders that ask for them. Run each phrase you plan to print through the POD trademark checker first; our print on demand trademark guide explains what a record means. The register is a first filter only: it is not legal advice, and it says nothing about the copyright in a character's look.
Light, flat and cheap to ship
A stocking weighs little and folds flat; Gooten sends its stockings in a poly bag. Next to a mug or a blanket, postage is a small share of what the buyer pays.
That gives you room to fold shipping into the price and offer free delivery without giving much away. Several stockings from one facility can travel together, while stockings from two suppliers arrive separately with two shipping charges, one more reason to keep a family's stockings with one supplier.
Niches that sell: gifts versus self-purchase
| Niche | Gift or self-purchase | Who pays | What page one showed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pets, with a name or photo | Mostly self, some gifts | Owners, and friends of owners | GiftsForYouNow, Personalization Mall, Zazzle, three Etsy pages, a photo-upload stocking shop |
| Baby's first Christmas | Self for parents, gift from grandparents | Parents, grandparents | Pottery Barn Kids twice, Personalization Mall, Caden Lane, two Etsy pages |
| Couples and newlyweds | Self, or a wedding gift | Couples, wedding guests | An Etsy couples' first Christmas stocking, Zazzle couples' stockings, a knitter pitching stockings as wedding gifts |
| The whole household | Self | One parent, for everyone | Lillian Vernon's "for Family & Pets" page ranks on the head terms |
| Grandparents' house | Self, for visiting grandchildren | Grandparents | Grandma-and-grandkids stockings from print shops, an Etsy grandkids page, a Reddit thread about stockings at the grandparents' |
| Teachers and coworkers | Gift | Parents, office organizers | Teachersgram, Zazzle, Amazon and five Etsy pages |
The self-purchase rows are where the returning buyer lives: whoever bought the household's set adds the next stocking. Gift rows such as teachers are one-off purchases, and I would expect them to sell later and cheaper. For the pet side, see our pet products guide. A family buying named stockings is also a natural buyer for named paper, which our custom wrapping paper guide covers.
Where to sell custom stockings
- Etsy. Printful and Printify both connect to Etsy (Printify calls itself an authorized Etsy partner), and both handle names typed into Etsy's personalization fields. Etsy pages appeared on page one for the embroidered, pet, baby, teacher and grandparent phrases. My direct requests to Etsy were refused, so the size of its stocking field is unknown to me.
- Amazon. Amazon pages rank for the head terms, and Printify lists Amazon among its integrations. Merch on Demand is another story: no stocking appeared in the Merch product lists I could read (one third-party guide lists apparel, phone cases, PopSockets, tote bags and throw pillows), and Amazon's own Merch pages did not load for me.
- Redbubble and TeePublic. Search results showed stocking artwork on stickers, tees and posters, but no physical stocking. Both sites blocked my direct checks.
- Your own store. The best home for proofs, saved order notes and an "add to your set" page for returning families.
Pricing and margin
The stocking itself is the cheap part; the buyer pays for the name, spelled right and on time. Page one held low-priced personalized stockings on Amazon beside brand stockings at several times that price. Price yours for the name, the proof and the reorder, not the fabric.
Build the name into the base price, since it is required; Etsy's add-on pricing only works on optional text fields, so save it for extras such as a second line or a photo. Prefer a small set discount over a bundle price you cannot reproduce next year for one extra stocking, because the single price is what the returning family pays. And leave room for the occasional reprint.
Check the buyers exist first
A stocking design gets one short season, so a miss costs you a year. Before you design, check that people are paying for the angle you have in mind and how much competition is already listed against it. You want proof of sales with room left over.
When a theme clearly sells, your own version made for that same buyer, in the style they already pick, is a sound bet. Make it recognizably yours, then let the name do the rest.
Where Trendlytic comes in
I built Trendlytic and its subscriptions are how I get paid, so count this as the one paragraph where I sell something. It helps with one decision here: which stocking niche deserves your designs. Enter an idea like "nurse christmas stocking" and it gathers what Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon Merch hold for that idea, so you learn whether buyers pay for it and how many rivals got there first. Designs gaining momentum this season earn a rising badge. When a phrase looks risky, a single click takes it to the live USPTO register, and that click is included at each plan level; the record that opens is yours to read, a first filter and nothing like legal advice. The first three days are a trial you open by entering a card, and after that plans cost from $19.99 a month. Check a stocking angle here.
FAQ
Can you print on demand Christmas stockings? Yes. Printify lists several, Gooten sells fleece and faux linen versions, and Printful had one rustic plaid-cuff stocking in stock on October 5, all printed by sublimation or DTF. Gelato showed none on the pages I could open.
Where can I get custom Christmas stockings with names? Shoppers mostly find retailers such as Personal Creations, Lillian Vernon and Pottery Barn, plus Etsy sellers. Sellers can add a printed name through Printify, Printful or Gooten, or an embroidered one through teelaunch.
What is the last day to order personalized stockings for Christmas? For US delivery, Printful's 2026 standard-shipping cutoffs for home and living products are November 26 when fulfilled outside the US and December 11 when fulfilled in the US. Printify had not published 2026 dates on October 5; its 2025 Printify Choice standard cutoff was December 10. Set your shop's cutoff a few days earlier to allow for proofing.
Are personalized Christmas stockings embroidered or printed? Both exist. Brand stockings and many Etsy listings are embroidered, while print on demand stockings from Printful, Printify and Gooten are printed; embroidered ones come from smaller suppliers.
What size is a Christmas stocking? There is no standard. The supplier stockings I checked ranged from 7 x 18 inches at Printful to 12 x 20 inches at Gooten and 13 x 19.3 inches for Printify's Santa stocking. Adding to a set you own? Measure one first.
Can I put team logos or cartoon characters on Christmas stockings? Only with a licence from the owner. Team names, logos and character names are protected, whoever typed them into the personalization field. Check wording on the USPTO register as a first filter, and get legal advice when in doubt.
Before the first stocking ships
A named stocking is a small product with a long memory. Get the name right, publish your order-by date, and keep the blank, the file and the listing, so the same family can come back to you.
Which new arrival would your shop be ready for next December: a baby, a partner, or a dog who now needs a stocking of its own?
