Print on Demand Greeting Cards: Packs, Paper and Dates

The Journal
Share this

TL;DR: Print on demand greeting cards are a small item with a big shipping problem: on a single card, the envelope, packaging and postage cost about as much as the card itself, so the business lives in packs, sets and occasions rather than one-off cards. Printful, Printify, Gelato and Gooten all print folded cards today, with very different paper, envelopes and minimum quantities, and only Printful had published 2026 Christmas order-by dates when I checked. Choose personalised or ready-made on purpose, keep licensed characters and lyrics off the front, and get Christmas listings live by mid-October.

Cards look like the easiest product in print on demand: one flat rectangle, no size chart, no colour variants. That is why so many sellers add them, sell a handful, and delete them in January. The design is rarely the problem. The trouble is the arithmetic around a product this cheap, and the calendar it runs on.

If you searched "custom greeting cards" or "custom thank you cards" to get fifty printed for your own family or business, the results belong to big printers and photo services: Shutterfly, Vistaprint, Minted, Hallmark and Canva, with Etsy's search page in the mix for thank-you cards. They are the right place for that job. This guide is for the person deciding whether to sell cards, though buyers will still get something from the paper section.

Don't miss the next one.

New POD niche analysis every Wednesday.

A card costs less than getting it there

Start with the uncomfortable part. A printed card is cheap to produce, and then the supplier adds shipping, an envelope and packaging to keep it flat. On one card, those extras land at roughly the size of the card's own cost, and the buyer pays postage again to send it on. The biggest costs sit around the product, not in it.

The suppliers have clearly noticed. Gelato's greeting card page offers its regional cards in packs of ten. Gooten sells quantities of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100. Printify sells singles and packs of 5 up to 50 depending on the product, with a bulk discount once an order holds 20 items from one print provider. Redbubble was running a multi-buy discount at 3, 10 and 50 items when I looked. Everyone in this chain wants more than one card in the parcel.

Printify adds one more nudge this season: from 15 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, every order going to a US address carries a small holiday surcharge. It is charged per order, so a pack of ten absorbs it and a lone card does not.

What that means for your listings:

  • Lead with packs and sets. Ten Christmas cards, five mixed birthday designs, 25 thank-you cards for a small shop. Price the pack and show what each card works out to.
  • Make quantity the variation. One listing with several pack sizes beats ten single-card listings, and bigger packs can carry a better per-card price because your shipping barely moves.
  • Treat the single card as an add-on. Sold beside a mug or a print, it rides on shipping already paid.
  • Sell the occasion, not the picture. "Teacher thank-you set of 10" is a reason to buy several. "Cute fox card" is a reason to buy one.

One US detail belongs in your listing copy too. USPS classes a square envelope as nonmachinable, because its sorting machines want a rectangle, and nonmachinable letters cost more to post. Gooten's 5 x 5 card and Gelato's 5.25 x 5.25 card both fall into that bucket, so tell buyers about the extra stamp before the post office does.

The pricing method itself is laid out in how to price print on demand products. Run those numbers on the pack, never on one card.

What the four big suppliers print today

I read each supplier's own product pages in early October 2026; confirm inside your account before you build artwork. The Etsy wedding invitations guide covered invitation-size flat stationery. This table covers the folded card somebody signs and posts.

Printful is the only one of the four built around the single card, which suits personalised one-offs. Gelato sits at the opposite end: the pack of ten is the product, in 4.25 x 5.5, 5 x 7, 5.25 x 5.25 and 5.5 x 8.5 inches, which fits Christmas and thank-you sets but not a lone birthday card. Gooten and Printify sit between them with real pack options and real paper choice, and Gooten publishes the most detail of anyone.

Printify lists Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop and Amazon among its integrations, and the wider comparison of suppliers that connect to Etsy lives in print on demand companies for Etsy.

What paper and print do to your reviews

Card buyers judge with their fingers, and most bad reviews in this category start in one of four places.

Weight. Thin stock is the fastest way to make a card feel like a flyer. Every supplier above uses proper card stock, but the light and heavy ends of each range feel different in the hand. If your listing says "premium", pick the heavier option and state the weight.

Matte versus gloss. Gloss makes a photo jump off the front, but people write inside cards. Gooten says glossy stock wants a permanent marker, while matte and uncoated stocks take an ordinary ballpoint. Printful coats the outside and only lightly coats the inside. A Christmas card that smudges when Grandma signs it earns a one-star review that has nothing to do with your artwork.

The white edge at the fold. Gooten folds its cards slightly offset on purpose so they open easily, and says the fold stays white as a result. Printful warns that small cracks are likely along its fold over time. Keep dark solid colour off the spine, or choose a background that forgives a hairline of white.

Colour shifts. Printful notes that one colour looks slightly different on its coated outside and lighter-coated inside, and that it may substitute comparable paper when stock runs low. So order samples from the facility that will print your orders, with your brand red, a skin tone and a deep navy on one test card.

Also read the reviews on the supplier's own product page. Printful's card page showed 76% of 137 reviewers recommending it when I checked, and the complaints I read were about thin envelopes and slow transit rather than ink.

Personalised or ready-made: decide before you design

These are two different shops that happen to sell the same object.

Personalised cards carry a name, a date, a photo or a message the buyer chose: the family photo Christmas card, the wedding thank-you card, the thank-you card with a shop's logo. They sell at a higher price, and the cost is your time. Every order needs a file built from the buyer's details, and the supplier prints exactly what you send, so a misspelt surname belongs to you.

On Etsy, the order form is Custom options, which allows five fields per listing at most, one detail apiece, as a text box, a list of choices or a file upload. Optional text fields can carry an add-on price, which is the tidy way to charge for a printed message inside. Etsy also wants the main photo of a personalised listing to show a finished, personalised item, not a blank card or placeholder text, so make one real example per design.

Write the proof step into the listing before the sale: how the proof arrives, how long the buyer has to approve it, and that nothing prints until they do. Ask for photos at full resolution, because a screenshot from a group chat prints soft on a 5 x 7 card.

Ready-made cards carry a standing design: a blunt birthday joke, a card for nurses, a breed-specific dog card, a sympathy card without the curly-script lily. No proofs, no typos, no waiting. One design sells to everyone who shares the joke, which is how a small catalogue builds volume.

The middle lane suits beginners: a ready-made design with one optional name on the front. Proofing stays light, and the buyer still feels the card was made for them.

The card calendar, and when each listing must be live

Every occasion has a buying window that opens well before the date, and a new listing needs time to be picked up by marketplace search before then. The dates below are real; the timing column is my working rule.

The UK and US Mother's Days sit two months apart, so one design can have two seasons. And the bottom rows keep a card shop alive between peaks: seasonal cards spike, while birthday and sympathy cards pay the bills in quiet months. For every selling date across the year in one place, the free print on demand calendar lays them out month by month.

It is October, so this section matters most right now. The wider fourth-quarter plan sits in my guide to Christmas print on demand. Here I only want the card question: when does a custom Christmas card order still arrive in time? This is what each supplier had published on 8 October 2026 for orders shipping to the US.

The same Printful card can come from a US or a European facility, and those routes have standard cut-offs about two weeks apart. Find out which route your orders take before you print a date anywhere.

A supplier's date is the last day to order for the parcel to reach your buyer by Christmas, yet a card buyer needs the pack well before that, with time left to write and post fifteen cards. Set your own "order by" date a week or more ahead of the supplier's, further still for personalised cards waiting on a proof, and put it in every listing and your shop announcement. In the final fortnight, swing your attention to New Year cards.

Cards also sell well beside the season's other paper products. If you already list custom wrapping paper, a card in the same pattern is the most natural add-on you have, and it solves the single-card shipping problem by travelling with the roll.

Niches that sell, and who is buying

Card buyers split into two groups. The gift buyer picks one card for one person, so the design has to land at thumbnail size and the title names the recipient. The self-purchase buyer orders a stack for their own use, so the listing has to make the pack obvious and the personalisation painless.

Professions work because nobody finds a card for a respiratory therapist in a supermarket aisle. Belated birthday is honest intent, and a card that owns the lateness with a joke beats a generic one sent late. Sympathy is hard and worth doing carefully, especially pet loss, where plain and human beats lilies and script. Business thank-you cards are the steadiest buyer of all: a small shop slips one into every parcel and reorders when the box runs out.

The licensed-character and quote trap

Cards invite a famous line. A cartoon character on the front, a film quote inside, a lyric from the first dance on a wedding thank-you card. Scroll the greeting card section of any big marketplace and you will find cards built on well-known characters and celebrity names. A live listing does not mean the design is allowed. It usually means nobody has reported it yet.

Characters are protected by copyright and often by trademark too. Film quotes and song lyrics are copyrighted text, and lyrics are among the most actively enforced. Short phrases are a separate risk: greeting cards and postcards sit in class 16 of the international classification, so a slogan registered for paper goods can stop you even when it sounds ordinary.

For phrases, put them through a trademark checker or the USPTO search before you build a range, and read what comes back. Treat the result as a first screen, not as legal advice: a clean result says nothing about copyright. The fuller method is in my print on demand trademark guide.

Where to sell greeting cards online

Here is what I could confirm for each marketplace on 8 October 2026.

Your own storeYesShopify or similar, plus a supplierBest home for business buyers who reorder

Etsy is the obvious first home: personalisation, gifting and occasion searches already live there, and you control the price, the pack sizes and the order form. Etsy's rules ask you to say a production partner makes the item and to state accurately where it ships from, so put both in the listing.

Redbubble is the low-effort second channel for ready-made art cards, with no packs to configure and your artist details printed on the back. Shoppers cannot edit a design there, only message the artist, so personalised work belongs elsewhere. Zazzle suits sellers who like building editable templates. Selling cards on Amazon means a supplier integration and Seller Central, which is a different business.

Check the niche before you spend the design time

Cards are quick to design, so people skip the research and start drawing. Then fifteen Christmas cards go live for an audience that turned out to be crowded or barely buying.

Check two things separately before committing the time: that real buyers are paying for cards in this occasion and audience, and that the shelf is not already stacked with established shops you cannot outrank in one season. Search counts alone mislead, because browsers search too, so look at what is actually selling. By hand, across Etsy, Redbubble and the rest, that is an evening of open tabs for each occasion.

When a card is clearly selling, the lesson is the buyer and the tone, not the file. Build your own version for that same person, in the style that buyer keeps picking.

Where my own tool fits in

Full transparency first: I started Trendlytic and still run it, and the subscriptions people pay for it are how I make a living. Weigh what follows with that in mind.

It helps with one step in this guide, the check before you design. Type an occasion or an audience, say "nurse retirement card", and it sets that phrase's Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon Merch results next to each other, so you see whether money is changing hands for it and how crowded that field already is. Of those four, only Etsy and Redbubble sell cards as far as I could confirm, so for this product the other two mainly show whether that audience spends money on themed goods at all. Designs gaining ground this month sit under a rising badge, which matters in October when you are choosing which Christmas angles to finish first. If a card leans on a phrase, one click on any plan opens it in the USPTO's live register; you judge the record yourself, as an early screen, not a lawyer's opinion. Paid plans start at $19.99 a month, following a 3-day trial that needs a card to open. Run a card niche through it if picking the niche is where you stall.

FAQ

Can you print on demand greeting cards?

Yes. Printful, Printify, Gelato and Gooten all print folded greeting cards on demand, and most also print flat cards or postcards. Minimums differ: Printful and Printify sell single cards, Gooten starts at one, and Gelato's current card products come in packs of ten.

Does Printful have greeting cards?

Yes. Printful prints a folded card at 4 x 6, 5 x 7 and 5.83 x 8.27 inches on stock of roughly 260 to 350 gsm, with an envelope and no minimum order. The outside is glossy from its US facility and matte from Europe, and the inside takes ballpoint pens. It also sells a 4 x 6 postcard.

Is selling greeting cards online profitable?

It can be, if you sell more than one card per order. Shipping and packaging on a single card cost close to the card itself, so shops that do well sell packs, occasion sets and business thank-you boxes, or add a card to a bigger order.

How do I sell custom greeting cards on Etsy?

Connect a supplier such as Printify, Printful, Gelato or Gooten, list each card with pack sizes as variations, and collect names or photos through Custom options. Disclose the production partner, use a finished personalised card as the main photo, and put a proof step in the listing.

What is the last day to order Christmas cards in 2026?

For Printful orders to the US, the published standard cut-off is 11 December when fulfilled in the US and 26 November when fulfilled abroad. Printify, Gelato and Gooten had not published 2026 dates by 8 October. Your buyer still has to write and post the cards, so set your listing deadline a week or more earlier.

Do print on demand greeting cards come with envelopes?

Usually. Printful and Gooten include one with every card, Printify with its folded cards and some flat styles, and Gelato lets you choose none, a standard recycled envelope or a premium feltmark one. A thin envelope is one of the complaints on Printful's own review page.

The short version

Sell packs, not cards. Choose the paper for the pen as well as the print. Decide whether you run a personalisation service or a design catalogue. Get Christmas cards live this month, with an order-by date that leaves your buyer time to post them. And check the niche before you draw.

So where would your first pack of cards start: Christmas this month, or the thank-you cards that sell all year?
