How to Sell T-Shirts on Etsy in 2026: The Real Margin

How to sell t-shirts on Etsy: what each blank leaves after fees, how crowded shirt searches are, Etsy's production partner rule, and a worked listing.

TL;DR: To sell t-shirts on Etsy, connect a print partner, disclose it on each listing, and aim at one narrow buyer: on 5 November 2026, "t shirt" matched 11.2 million active Etsy listings and "bus driver shirt" 4,748. At $29.99 with free shipping, one shirt leaves $5.74 to $13.35 after Etsy's fees, base cost and US shipping, depending on blank and provider, and an Offsite Ads order takes $4.50 more. Comfort Colors 1717 is the blank Etsy's leading listings name most, and it leaves the least. Put a real photo of a sample first, mockups after, and look up the phrase on your shirt before you list.

The guides on page one for this keyword come from companies selling something: the printing, a store, a marketing tool. So does this one, and I will say where. But reading them on 5 November, I kept hitting the same gap. Printful's guide says to aim for a 20% to 30% margin and Printify's says 40% to 50%, and neither works through one shirt. Shopify's and Outfy's give no margin at all. None counts the listings you are up against.

This post does both, for shirts only. For opening a shop, read how to sell on Etsy. For the model in general, read Etsy print on demand.

Plain t-shirt searches are the crowded part of Etsy

On 5 November 2026 I asked Etsy's official API, through our free Etsy keyword tool, how many active listings match each phrase, then read the first 100 it returned.

PhraseActive listingsTypical price, first 100Listed in the last 90 days, first 100
t shirt11,169,735$30.008
funny shirt3,616,985$21.6517
dog mom shirt389,730$24.9534
nurse shirt311,731$24.4525
beekeeper shirt4,976$25.6046
bus driver shirt4,748$22.9940
dialysis nurse shirt2,641$21.3233
retired bus driver shirt52$25.9911 of 52

The broad phrases are a wall. "Funny shirt" means 3.6 million rivals, and only 17 of the first 100 are recent. For "t shirt" it is 8.

One word changes the shelf. Adding "dialysis" cuts "nurse shirt" from 311,731 listings to 2,641, and recent listings are more common in the narrow phrases: 46 of 100 for "beekeeper shirt."

Narrow does not mean a higher price. The narrow shirts here ask about $21 to $26, much like "funny shirt," "nurse shirt" and "dog mom shirt." Going narrow buys a chance of being seen. It does not buy margin.

The count matches any listing with those words, not only shirts. The first 100 are the API's ranking, not the page a shopper sees. And Etsy publishes no search volume, so a low count proves nothing about demand: 52 listings can be an open corner or a corner nobody shops. The term "Etsy" is a trademark of Etsy, Inc. This post uses data from the Etsy API but is not endorsed or certified by Etsy, Inc.

So the way to stand out is not a better funny shirt. It is a shirt that names one person: not "driver," but the school bus driver on the last run before retirement. The buyer is often someone else, a coworker or a grown child, who sees the shirt and thinks of that person. Our guide to keywords for t-shirts turns that buyer into phrases.

Pick the niche from what sells, not from what you like

A listing count only measures crowding. Before you design, you need the other half: validate real demand against saturation, and look at what actually sells, not only at search counts.

Etsy shows no sales for a single listing, so one marketplace rarely settles it. The stronger evidence is a buyer who keeps turning up across several marketplaces, with new designs still getting through. In the 1,000 winning designs we read on 29 October 2026, nurses and healthcare took 30 places, 20 of them on Etsy, and the winners stacked a specific person with a season or a joke. Our best selling t-shirt designs post has the themes.

By hand, that check is hours per idea across Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon. It is the step most new shops skip, and the one our Etsy niche research page is about.

When a theme clearly sells, take the buyer from it and leave the file alone: your own version for the same buyer, with your own art and wording.

Which blank to pick

Three blanks cover most of what a new Etsy shirt shop needs.

BlankFabricFitPrintfulPrintifyPrintify Premium
Comfort Colors 17176.1 oz garment-dyed ring-spun cottonBoxy, shorter body$15.60$12.41$10.72
Bella+Canvas 30014.2 oz combed ring-spun cottonSlimmer, side seams$11.92$10.98$8.77
Gildan 50005.3 oz cottonBoxy, roomy sleeves$9.44$8.39$6.20

One shirt, before shipping, read on 5 November 2026 from Printful's product pages and printify.com/make-your-own-shirt. Fabric from comfortcolors.com, gildan.com and printful.com/blog/gildan-5000-vs-bella-canvas-3001.

Comfort Colors 1717 is the Etsy shelf's favorite. When we counted 250 leading Etsy listings on 2 November 2026, 116 named Comfort Colors in the title or tags, against 1 each for Bella+Canvas and Gildan. Those Etsy rows lean on favorites, not sales. Its washed shades lead the Etsy side of our shirt color count, and our Comfort Colors color chart and Comfort Colors size chart have the details. Choose it when the niche wants a soft, vintage look and you can price for it.

Bella+Canvas 3001 is the light, slimmer option, in the middle on price.

Gildan 5000 is the cheapest of the three. It leaves the most per shirt, and Etsy's leading listings rarely name it. Its measurements are in our Gildan size chart.

Printify's price depends on the print provider you choose. Premium costs $39 a month, or from $24.99 a month billed yearly (printify.com/pricing, November 2026). At the yearly rate, its $1.69 off a 1717 needs about 15 shirts a month to pay for itself, so skip it until you sell that many.

Start with one blank: one size chart, one sample to judge, one set of numbers to get right.

DTG or DTF: how the design gets onto the shirt

In plain terms, from Printful's own comparison (printful.com/blog/dtg-vs-dtf-printing, dated October 2024):

DTGDTF
How it worksInk printed straight into the fabricDesign printed on film, then heat-pressed on
FeelSoft, part of the shirtSits on top, can feel plasticky until washed
On blackColors can look less vividStays vivid on any fabric color
Best forCotton, bold and simple designsFine detail, photos, bright art
Watch forMay fade slightly over many washesLarge solid areas can feel stiff

Printful also sells DTFlex, its own version of DTF, on more than 30 products including the Gildan 5000 (printful.com/dtflex, November 2026). Those pages are its marketing, and reviews on its Gildan 5000 page range from "DTF print is excellent" to stiff, like vinyl.

So order a sample, in your real color, with your real design, and wash it a few times before you list. Printful's t-shirt page offers 20% off samples (November 2026).

What one shirt really leaves after fees

Etsy's fees for a US seller (help.etsy.com, November 2026) are a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the whole order including shipping, and payment processing of 3% + $0.25. Our Etsy fees guide covers them all.

Shipping one shirt to a US address costs $4.95 at Printful, plus a $0.40 surcharge from 15 October 2026 to 17 January 2027 (printful.com/shipping, November 2026). Printify's Monster Digital table lists $4.95 Standard for these tees (printify.com/shipping-rates, updated 4 November 2026).

What is left, with shipping free to the buyer and built into the price:

Blank and providerBaseShippingLeft at $24.99Left at $29.99Left at $34.99
Gildan 5000, Printify$8.39$4.95$8.83$13.35$17.88
Gildan 5000, Printful$9.44$5.35$7.38$11.90$16.43
Bella+Canvas 3001, Printify$10.98$4.95$6.24$10.76$15.29
Bella+Canvas 3001, Printful$11.92$5.35$4.90$9.42$13.95
Comfort Colors 1717, Printify$12.41$4.95$4.81$9.33$13.86
Comfort Colors 1717, Printful$15.60$5.35$1.22$5.74$10.27

Etsy's fees are $2.82, $3.30 and $3.77 at the three prices. No sales tax, Printify free plan, one shirt to one US address.

Fees apply to the total the buyer pays, so $24.99 plus $5 shipping works out the same as $29.99 with free shipping.

What I take from this:

  • The favorite blank needs the highest price. At $24.99, inside the range niche shirts ask, a Printful 1717 leaves $1.22.
  • Offsite Ads can flip a sale. Etsy charges 15% of the order on a sale from its ads if your shop made under $10,000 in the past 365 days, and 12% otherwise (help.etsy.com, November 2026). That is $4.50 on $29.99, and on a $24.99 Printful 1717 the order loses $2.53. Our fees guide explains the opt-out.
  • Percentage targets imply real prices. Printify says "a smart pricing strategy targets a profit margin of 40% to 50%" (printify.com/blog/sell-t-shirts-on-etsy, November 2026). If that means after Etsy's fees and shipping, 40% on its 1717 takes about $35. Printful's 20% to 30% on its own 1717 takes about $30 to $35.

Also left out: Etsy charges a one-time shop setup fee and says the "cost varies by location" (Printify's guide says $15). Samples, refunds, reprints and Etsy Ads are yours too. I read one price per shirt, and 2XL and up can cost more. Etsy also takes its 3% on sales tax, which is cents.

Run your own numbers in our free Etsy fee calculator before you set a price.

Etsy's rules for a shirt someone else prints

Etsy's help center says "using production partners, including print-on-demand services, to fulfill and ship orders is allowed on Etsy," as long as the items are "the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)" (help.etsy.com, November 2026). Its Creativity Standards file a design you made and a partner produced under "Designed by a seller" (etsy.com/legal/creativity, November 2026).

For a shirt shop, that means:

  • Disclose the partner on the listing. Etsy names Printful, Printify and Gooten as print on demand services and says "you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings." You add it under "Production partners" in "Listing details."
  • The company's name can stay private. Etsy lets you choose whether buyers see the partner's name. If you hide it, you enter a public descriptive title instead.
  • State where it ships from. The Creativity Standards ask for accurate information about where the item will ship from.
  • The design has to be yours. Reselling an existing design does not count. Using a business that does not qualify as a partner can bring penalties up to account suspension.
  • AI art needs a real creative role. Etsy allows it "when sellers play a clear creative role," and says sellers "must still disclose when an item is created using AI."

Listing photos for shirts

Etsy "requires at least one unedited photo for most items," showing "the actual item against a real background" (help.etsy.com, November 2026). Print on demand has its own line: if a partner prints your original design on a standard base product, "you may use a stock photo mockup, if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use."

But Etsy also wants the first photo to be "the clearest, most realistic representation of the item buyers will receive," and its Seller Handbook recommends a first image of the physical item, with partner mockups later (etsy.com/seller-handbook, November 2026). Your sample solves this.

Etsy allows 20 photos and 2 videos per listing. My order for a shirt:

  1. Your sample, worn or laid flat on a real background, in your main color.
  2. A close-up of the print, so the texture shows.
  3. Mockups in your other colors, from your partner or our free mockup generator.
  4. One image naming every color you offer.
  5. The size chart.

Then check the first photo at phone thumbnail size. If the phrase cannot be read there, the design is too thin.

A worked title and 13 tags

An invented example: a shirt for retiring school bus drivers, with the line "Last Stop" over a small bus route. "Retired bus driver shirt" matched only 52 listings, so the shelf is thin, which still needs the demand check above.

Etsy's own guidance (help.etsy.com, November 2026) is tighter than most advice you will read. Titles can run to 140 characters, but "consider using less than 15 words," avoid repetition and subjective words, and only include occasions or recipients "if they're essential." Here the retirement gift is the point, so it stays:

Title: Retired School Bus Driver T-Shirt, Funny Retirement Gift, Last Stop Tee, Garment Dyed Unisex

Etsy allows 13 tags of up to 20 characters and says to use them "when there's no matching attribute," so fill in color and occasion attributes first.

RoleTags
Whoretired bus driver, school bus driver
The shirtbus driver shirt, bus driver tee, school bus shirt, last stop shirt, retirement shirt
The giftbus driver gift, retirement gift, funny retirement tee, school staff gift
The momentdriver appreciation, driver retirement

The tool's counts for these run from 197 listings for "retired bus driver" to 13,620 for "bus driver gift." "Retirement gift," at 358,454, is the one broad tag, there for the shopper who starts from the occasion. Our Etsy SEO guide covers the mechanics, and Etsy keyword research shows how we score tags like these.

Size chart and shipping times

A buyer cannot try a shirt on, so give them numbers. A medium 1717 is 20.25 inches wide and 28 long. A medium Gildan 5000 is 20 wide and 29 long (brand sizing, in our charts above). Same letter, an inch shorter, so one chart cannot cover two blanks.

Put the chart for your exact blank in the photos and the description, and say the fit in words: "boxy, size up for loose."

Etsy's processing time is how long until the order reaches the carrier, in business days, and weekend orders count as Friday orders (help.etsy.com, November 2026). Printful quotes 2 to 5 business days to make the shirt, then 3 to 4 by Flat Rate, as an estimate (printful.com/shipping, November 2026). Printify's Monster Digital table lists 2 to 5 for Standard shipping and 4 to 8 for Economy, after production.

Enter the slow end. Etsy wants "at least 80% of your orders" to ship on time, and missing its standards can "risk lowering your search visibility" (help.etsy.com, November 2026). If you start now, read your partner's holiday cutoffs too; our Christmas print on demand guide covers the season.

First sales and first reviews

I cannot honestly give you a number of days to a first sale. It depends on the niche, and Etsy publishes no such figure. What I would do:

  • Go deep before wide. Five shirts for one buyer make a shop that buyer recognizes. One shirt each for five niches does not.
  • Bring the first buyers yourself. Show the shirt where that person already gathers, such as a Facebook group that allows it.
  • Ask once, after delivery. Etsy's help mentions quick replies for "asking buyers for a post-purchase review," and buyers have 100 days from delivery to leave one.
  • Never pay for a good review. Etsy's anti-shilling rules forbid incentives for positive reviews (etsy.com/seller-handbook, November 2026).
  • Fix problems before they become stars. Under 40 reviews, Etsy's standard is "no more than 4 reviews" of 3 stars or less (help.etsy.com, November 2026), so reprint or refund quickly.
  • Read your stats after a few weeks. No views points at the title and tags. Views without sales points at the photo or the price.

Trademark risk on the phrase

A shirt is mostly words, so the phrase is where the risk sits. Etsy removes material when it gets a report that meets its policy, and it may end selling privileges after repeated notices (etsy.com/legal/ip, November 2026).

Take the example above. On 5 November our free trademark lookup found four exact records for LAST STOP. The three it displays cover video games, wine and software, and none of the four claims clothing, which is class 25. That is a good sign for this shirt, not a clearance. A register search is a first filter: it misses other spellings and unregistered rights, and it is never legal advice.

The lookup is one click on one phrase, so run it on the line on the shirt and on any tag that names something you did not invent. Our POD trademark checker page shows how it works inside Trendlytic. Teams, bands, shows and characters stay out altogether.

Common mistakes

  • Tagging the product, not the person. "Shirt," "tee" and "funny" say nothing about who it is for.
  • Pricing for a Gildan, printing on a Comfort Colors. Each blank needs its own numbers.
  • Listing from a mockup alone. You have not seen the print your buyer gets.
  • One size chart for every blank. That inch of length is a return waiting to happen.
  • Copying a shirt that sells. Take the buyer and make your own version for the same buyer.

Before you pay for a sample

Everything above assumes the niche is real, and that is the hours-by-hand step: checking one buyer across four marketplaces and telling demand from crowding.

That is what we built Trendlytic for, so weigh this knowing it is our product. One search shows a niche's leading designs on Etsy, Redbubble, TeePublic and Amazon US side by side. Etsy rows carry favorites and listing dates, never sales. It starts from $19.99/mo, with 100 searches plus the 1,000 top winning designs of the day in Best Design Instant. For a shirt shop, Keyword Research pulls the tags the leading Etsy listings use, each scored for demand and competition. A USPTO lookup is one click on any phrase, and the 3-day trial asks for a card. Check your shirt niche before you order the sample.

Choosing a partner is the easier part: print on demand companies for Etsy compares them.

FAQ

Can you sell print on demand t-shirts on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy allows production partners, including print on demand services, if the design is your own or the buyer's customization and you disclose the partner on the listing.

How much do you make per t-shirt on Etsy?

On a $29.99 shirt with free shipping, $5.74 to $13.35 before tax, ads and refunds, depending on blank and provider (prices read 5 November 2026).

What is the best t-shirt to sell on Etsy?

Comfort Colors 1717 is the blank leading Etsy listings name most, and it leaves the least, so it needs a higher price. Gildan 5000 leaves the most, and Bella+Canvas 3001 sits between.

Is selling t-shirts on Etsy saturated?

The plain searches are: "t shirt" matched 11.2 million listings on 5 November 2026. Narrow phrases are far smaller, such as "dialysis nurse shirt" at 2,641, though a low count alone does not prove anyone buys.

Can a mockup be my first listing photo?

Etsy's help allows an authorized stock mockup for a partner-printed design, but it asks for the most realistic first photo, and its Seller Handbook recommends the physical item. A photo of your sample covers both.

Who is the one person your first shirt is for, and which blank would you print it on?
