Etsy's rules, not ours

Every check comes from Etsy's help pages: the 140-character title, fewer than 15 words, no repetition, 13 tags of up to 20 characters.

Each problem with its fix

Repeated words, list-like titles, duplicate and near-duplicate tags, empty slots and names someone owns, each marked on the tag it concerns.

What Etsy asks of a title and its tags

Etsy publishes the rules in its own help center. A title can be up to 140 characters, and Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words that clearly state what the item is, without repetition, without subjective words such as “perfect”, and without price or shipping. Holidays, occasions and recipients belong in the title only when they are essential to the item. A listing takes up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, letters, numbers and spaces only; Etsy calls each tag an opportunity to be matched with a shopper's search and recommends a diverse array of them.

Fixing a listing that is live but not selling

  1. Clear the rule breaks first. Duplicate tags and empty slots are searches the listing cannot match; a comma list of phrases in the title can move into those slots.
  2. Check where it shows today. The Etsy rank checker finds your listings in the first 300 results for a phrase, so you have a before to compare with.
  3. Replace weak tags with phrases buyers use. The Etsy keyword tool shows how many listings compete for a phrase, and the tag generator lists what the leading listings use.

The grader reads words only. Etsy's search also weighs sales, reviews, photos and how shoppers respond, which no title can fix. The full guide is in Etsy listing optimization.

Clean words are half the job. Are they the words buyers search?

Trendlytic's Keyword Research reads the Etsy listings that lead your niche and lists the phrases they rank on, each with its demand, a 12-month trend and how many listings already compete.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my Etsy listing is optimized?

Paste the title and the 13 tags above and press Grade my listing. Each line of the result is one of Etsy's published rules: a title of up to 140 characters and ideally fewer than 15 words, no repetition or subjective words, no price or shipping, 13 tags of up to 20 characters each with no duplicates.

What does the score mean?

It is a summary of the list, not Etsy's ranking. Etsy's search also weighs things this tool cannot see, such as sales, reviews, photos and how shoppers react to the listing. A high score means the words follow Etsy's rules; whether they are the words buyers search is a separate question.

Why does it flag a title that lists phrases with commas?

Etsy asks for a title that clearly states what the item is, with fewer than 15 words and no repetition. A title built as a comma list of keywords usually breaks all three. The phrases are not lost: they can go in the tags.

Should I use all 13 tags?

Etsy allows 13 and calls each tag an opportunity to be matched with a shopper's search, so an empty slot is a search the listing cannot match. Etsy also recommends a diverse array of tags, so near-duplicates such as "plant shirt" and "plants shirt" are flagged too.

Is my listing sent anywhere?

No. The grader runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is sent or stored, and there is no daily limit.
