TL;DR: In the US, standard art print sizes cluster around 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 12x16, 16x20, 18x24, 20x30 and 24x36 inches, and almost all of them belong to one of four aspect ratio families: 1:1, 4:5, 3:4 and 2:3. Most of the rest of the world shops the ISO A-series instead, from A5 up to A0, which holds a single 1:1.414 ratio at every step. At 300 DPI a 16x20 inch print needs 4800 x 6000 pixels, and an A3 needs 3508 x 4961. Decide the ratio family before the sizes, because one file lists cleanly across an entire family and never across two.
Size questions look trivial until you are the one answering them. A buyer wants to know whether your 12x16 will sit in their A3 frame. A fulfiller's upload template asks for pixel dimensions, not inches. You want one design to cover four listings and cannot work out which four it can cover.

Standard art print sizes in inches
The US size set is not based on any mathematical system. It exists because frame manufacturers settled on these dimensions decades ago, and the whole market followed. That is genuinely useful to you: a buyer who can walk into a store and pick up a frame for your print is far likelier to buy it.
Sizes below are quoted short side first, which is the standard convention. Every one of them exists in portrait and landscape.

Squares get their own short list, because they behave differently. Orientation stops mattering, cropping gets easier, and a single file covers every square size you offer.

The catch with squares is the frame shelf. Ready-made square frames are easy to find up to about 12x12 and get noticeably scarcer above that, so a 20x20 buyer is more likely to need a custom frame.
The ISO A-series, in mm and inches
Outside North America, wall art is sold in A-sizes. The A-series has one property that no inch size can match: each step is the previous sheet folded in half across its long edge, so the proportions never change. A1 is two A2s. A2 is two A3s. That only works at a ratio of 1 to the square root of 2, which is where 1:1.414 comes from.
The practical payoff is large. One correctly proportioned ISO file prints at every A size with zero cropping.

For wall art, A4, A3 and A2 carry most of the volume, with A1 as the statement size. A0 is poster-campaign territory and rarely offered by print-on-demand fulfillers.
There is also an ISO B-series, which slots between the A sizes and shows up in European poster printing. B2 is 500 x 707 mm, for example. It keeps the same 1:1.414 ratio, so an ISO-proportioned file covers it too, but you will rarely see it in a print-on-demand catalog.
Pixel dimensions at 300 DPI
The only formula you need is pixels = inches times DPI. A 12 inch edge at 300 DPI is 3,600 pixels. For millimeters, divide by 25.4 first.
Here is that worked out for the sizes you are most likely to list. The 150 DPI column is there because it is the number you end up at when a file gets stretched to twice the size it was built for.

Two things worth reading off that table.
First, halving the DPI is not a small saving, it is a quarter of the pixels. A 24x36 at 300 DPI is 77.8 million pixels. The same print at 150 DPI is 19.4 million. That is why a file that feels enormous on your drive can still be short for a large print.
Second, there is a useful shortcut hiding in the A sizes. A4 at 300 DPI and A2 at 150 DPI are both 2480 x 3508 pixels, because A2 is exactly double A4 on every edge. The trick is almost but not fully general, because the A-series rounds to whole millimeters at each fold. A1 is 841 mm long rather than double A3's 420, so pairs like that land a handful of pixels apart instead of matching exactly.
Whether 150 DPI is acceptable depends on viewing distance. A 24x36 hangs across a room and gets looked at from several feet away, so softness is far less visible than on an 8x10 held at arm's length. That said, nearly every fulfiller specifies 300 DPI, and matching the spec is the cheaper decision than arguing with a refund. One terminology note, since the templates are inconsistent: DPI refers to printer dots and PPI to image pixels, but print-on-demand upload forms use the two words interchangeably. When a template asks for 300 DPI, it wants 300 pixels per inch in your file.

The aspect ratio families
This is the section that saves you the most work, because ratio, not size, is what determines how many listings one file can fill.

Those last two rows explain why "one design, every size" quietly fails. 5x7 and 11x14 are both extremely popular frame sizes, and neither shares a ratio with any of the big four families. Each one needs its own crop, and if you skip that step the fulfiller crops for you, usually badly.
The distances between families are worth knowing in numbers, because they tell you how much of a composition you lose when you force a file into a foreign ratio:
- A 3:4 or a 2:3 file needs roughly 6 percent trimmed off one dimension to fill an A size. Usually survivable.
- A 4:5 file loses about 12 percent of its width going to an A size. That is enough to cut into a subject.
- 5x7 sits within about 1 percent of the ISO ratio, close enough that the crop is invisible.
- Going between 3:4 and 2:3 costs about 11 percent, which is why a file built for 18x24 rarely looks right at 24x36 without rework.
The clean approach is to build one master at a generous size in your chosen family, then export per ratio. Two masters, one at 3:4 or 2:3 and one at ISO, covers nearly the whole global market.
Frames and mats: decoding "16x20 frame with an 11x14 mat opening"
Buyers ask about this constantly, and the confusion costs sales, so it is worth being precise.
A frame size always describes the outside of the glass. A 16x20 frame holds 16x20 inches of visible area. A mat is a card board that sits on top of the print with a window cut in it, so it covers the print's outer edge and leaves a border of colored card between the art and the frame.
So "16x20 frame with an 11x14 mat opening" means the frame is 16x20, but the print it needs is 11x14. A buyer who owns that setup and orders your 16x20 print ends up with something too large to fit. A buyer who owns a bare 16x20 frame and orders your 11x14 ends up with a gap.
One more detail that matters for your file. A mat opening is cut slightly smaller than the print it holds, typically by about a quarter inch on each side, so the print's edges tuck underneath and no white gap shows. A mat sold for an 11x14 print usually has a window nearer 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Your design therefore needs a quarter inch around the whole perimeter that you do not mind losing.

Uneven borders are normal, because the inch sizes do not share ratios. If you want a perfectly even border, the pairings that deliver it are 5x7 in 8x10, 12x16 in 16x20, 16x20 in 20x24 and 18x24 in 24x30.
Writing the frame guidance directly into your listing removes the main reason someone messages you before buying. A line like "fits an 11x14 frame, or a 16x20 frame with an 11x14 mat" does the whole job.
Inches or A-sizes: the split that loses you buyers
The US and Canada buy in inches. The UK, the EU, Australia and much of Asia buy in A-sizes. This is not a preference, it is what their frames are.
Here is the concrete failure. A buyer in Berlin owns an A3 frame, which is 297 x 420 mm. Your 12x16 inch print is 305 x 406 mm. It is about 8 mm too wide to slide in and 14 mm too short to fill the opening. It does not work in either direction, so they close the tab.

Not one pairing is a true match. Treating them as swappable is how you collect returns.
Three things fix most of it:
Offer both size sets. Global fulfillers with local printing generally carry inch sizes and A sizes in the same catalog, so a single design can serve both markets without you shipping paper across an ocean. Which sizes are actually available varies quite a lot between providers, so check the catalog before you promise anything, and our comparison of the main print-on-demand companies is a reasonable place to start that check.
Put millimeters in the listing. Even where you only sell inches, quoting "12x16 in (305 x 406 mm)" lets an international buyer decide for themselves instead of guessing.
Use the size as a keyword. In the UK, "A3 print" is a search term in the way "11x14 print" is in the US. Sellers who only ever write inches are invisible to half the planet's search queries. Orientation, bleed and safe margins
Three production details that change which sizes you should pick, rather than how you sell them.
Orientation is two products, not one. Portrait 18x24 and landscape 24x18 are different files, different previews, and different listings on most platforms. They are also different purchases, because a buyer has a specific wall in mind. Art that reads well either way doubles your listings from one idea, and squares avoid the question completely.
Bleed shrinks your usable canvas. Trimming has tolerances, so fulfillers ask for a little extra image beyond the finished size and want important content kept away from the edge. Typical figures look like this, though your fulfiller's own template always wins:

Gallery wrap should change your size choice. On a wrapped canvas, a band of your artwork folds around the sides of the frame and is no longer visible from the front. A composition that fills the sheet edge to edge is the wrong fit for wrap, and on small canvases the lost band is a big proportion of the piece. If a design depends on its full frame, offer it on paper instead, and push wrap toward the larger sizes. Which sizes to list first
Short version, because the selling side is a different article.
For a US-facing shop, start with 8x10, 11x14, 12x16, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36. For a Europe-facing shop, start with A4, A3 and A2. These are the sizes whose frames sit on every retailer's shelf, and frame availability removes the last bit of friction between liking a print and buying it.
I am not going to publish percentages for which size sells best, because I do not have reliable per-size sales data and neither does anyone quoting it at you. What is observable is the frame shelf, and it points at the list above.
On ratio, pick 3:4 if you want the widest inch coverage from one master (9x12, 12x16, 18x24, 30x40), pick 2:3 if the large statement sizes matter most (12x18, 20x30, 24x36), and keep a separate ISO master for A sizes. What is the most common art print size? 8x10 inches is the most widely stocked and most frequently framed art print size in the US, with 11x14 and 16x20 close behind it. Outside the US, A4 is the everyday equivalent, followed by A3. The answer shifts by product, though: 8x10 dominates ready-made frames, while 18x24 and 24x36 dominate posters.
What size is A3 in inches? A3 is 297 x 420 mm, which works out to 11.7 x 16.5 inches. There is no exact inch equivalent. 12x16 inches is the closest standard size, but it is roughly 8 mm wider and 14 mm shorter than A3, so it will not sit properly in an A3 frame.

Is 11x14 the same aspect ratio as 8x10? No. 8x10 is exactly 4:5, while 11x14 is 11:14, which is slightly narrower relative to its height. People treat them as interchangeable, but a file cropped for 8x10 loses a thin strip off each side when it prints at 11x14. Crop the two separately.
What size frame do I need for an 11x14 print? Either an 11x14 frame with no mat, or a 16x20 frame fitted with a mat cut for an 11x14 opening, which leaves a border of about 2.5 inches at the sides and 3 inches top and bottom. Frame sizes always refer to the outside of the glass, never to the print inside it.
Using the chart
If you take one habit from this page, make it this: settle the aspect ratio before you open the canvas. Sizes are easy to add later and ratios are expensive to change, because changing a ratio means recomposing the art rather than exporting it again.
