Straight about closed shops
Etsy's API leaves closed shops out, and Etsy keeps a name an open shop once used. So a clear result says no open shop uses it, and Etsy has the last word.
How to check if an Etsy shop name is taken
- Type the name the way you want buyers to see it, capitals included. Etsy shop names have no spaces, so Wild Cat Studio is checked as WildCatStudio.
- Press Check on Etsy. The checker asks Etsy's official API for an open shop with that exact name.
- If a shop has it, you get a link to that shop and up to eight names built on yours, each one a click away from its own check.
- If no open shop has it, look the name up on the trademark register, then enter it in Shop Manager, where Etsy confirms it.

Why the checker never says “available”
Etsy's help center is plain about it: once a shop name has been used on an open shop, it can't be used again, even if that shop has since closed (“How to Change Your Shop Name”, read October 2026). The API this tool reads lists open shops only, so a closed shop that still holds a name does not show up in it.
That is why a clear result reads “No open Etsy shop uses this name”. It rules out the usual problem, a shop already trading under the name, in a few seconds. The final answer is Etsy's, given in Shop Manager when you type the name while setting up the shop or renaming it.

Your username is a separate name. It belongs to your account, it shows in your profile address (etsy.com/people/...), and Etsy's help center says it cannot be changed. The shop name is the one in your shop's address, etsy.com/shop/ followed by the name, and it can be changed later; our guide to changing an Etsy shop name walks through it. Check the name on the trademark register too
Etsy's Intellectual Property Policy (updated June 2023) lets a rights owner report a shop name or a username, not only a listing. Renaming a shop after a report is far more work than picking another name today.

Is an Etsy shop name the same as a username?
No, they are two separate names. Your shop name is the name of your business, it appears in your shop's address (etsy.com/shop/ followed by the name), and it can be changed. This tool checks shop names only.
What if the name is taken by a closed shop?
Then Etsy will not give it out. Its help center says a shop name used on an open shop can't be used again, even after that shop closes. Etsy's API lists open shops only, so this checker cannot see a closed shop's name: a clear result rules out open shops, and Etsy confirms the rest when you enter the name in Shop Manager. If Etsy turns down a name the checker found clear, a closed shop is a likely reason, and a variant with a different ending is the quickest way around it.
Can I change my Etsy shop name later?
Yes. Before your shop opens you can change the name as often as you like. Once it is open, Etsy's help center (read October 2026) says you can change it up to 5 times in Shop Manager under Settings, then Your shop; after that, a change needs Etsy Support's approval.
